Why do we lock things up? In my “neighborhood” folks use cables like this to close off the entrances to their hayfields, making it more difficult for 4-wheelers and cars to get in and destroy the hay crop. In fact, the word fence comes from defense (L. de- to strike). Fences, cables, walls...all are used to protect and defend us and to make us feel safe and secure (L. se- freedom from + curacare). And often, when we affix something (a chain, a cable, a rope) we say we‟re making it secure.
