This photo shows a chain and a ring. For now, they are affixed, but left alone, the bond will eventually be broken. As oxygen reacts with iron in the presence of humidity (L. humidus-moistness) in the air, a brownish-red substance forms on thesurface, and the metal is weakened. This substance, hydrated iron oxide (3Fe2O3 . H2O) is commonly called rust and is the product of oxidation, an exothermic, or heat-releasing, chemical reaction.
